Day 13 (Thurs. May 25/06) Los Angeles
The outskirts of Los Angeles
One mountain top still had snow. The Foothill Drive-In Theatre was a big one. The screen
is gone, the concession stand looks boarded up and the lot is still paved with the slopes for
watching the show. It looks like it is used as a parking lot now. A little further down the
road were these dome shaped trees. There were so many of them that it looks like they grow
that shape naturally.
The End of Route 66
Santa Monica Blvd and Ocean Ave. is the end of Route 66. A plaque dedicating Highway 66 to Will
Rogers in 1952 is in a park between Ocean Ave. and the cliff overlooking the Pacific Coast Highway.
The park at the end of Route 66
This area is over run with ground squirrels. They have holes all over the top
of the cliff. I wonder if the "swiss cheese" effect these holes have has anything to do with
erosion of the cliffs. The strange looking trees had soccer like balls growing on the branches.
During our drive along Sunset Blvd. it was evident that many homes are
built too close to the edge of the mountain side. We saw one house that already had a large
section of one corner already sticking out from the cliff. You could see the bottom of the cement
slab the house was sitting on.
